FarmFleet at Planet Labs: satellites for the development of precision agriculture

Illustration

Satellite-based monitoring systems allow agricultural holdings around the world to manage large agricultural areas in a high-quality manner. By combining satellite and drone technology, farmers can receive comprehensive information on monitoring their land and make the best decisions to achieve the best results. While satellites provide global monitoring of fields and land areas, drones provide point solutions from low altitude.
Therefore, the FarmFleet team visited the office of Planet Labs, a company that has changed the approach to Earth monitoring with its satellite technology. Planet Labs' first product was a prototype satellite that was built in a garage using common commercial components. Today, Planet Labs is a publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The Planet Labs fleet includes about 200 satellites that cover the entire globe several times a day, providing up-to-date data for numerous industries.

Planet Labs pays special attention to agriculture. The company's technologies provide operational monitoring of large areas to increase productivity and optimise processes on all continents. The company entered the Ukrainian market in 2017.

During the meeting, they discussed the potential of satellite monitoring to address key challenges in the agricultural sector, such as effective land management and combating illegal practices. In particular, the successful example of Brazil shows how the use of satellite data has reduced illegal deforestation by 40%. This experience can be adapted to the needs of Ukrainian agriculture.
The use of open data is becoming crucial for creating new projects, developing and strengthening economically important sectors, including support for Ukrainian enterprises, farmers and other areas that can significantly improve their efficiency and expand their capabilities thanks to modern technologies.

FarmFleet would like to thank the Competitive Economy of Ukraine Programme USAID and the Ukrainian Foundation for Startups (UFS) for organising the visit and the opportunity to join the global technological transformation.
